At the heart of its mission lies the idea of free world-class education for anyone, anywhere, opening access to language skills that had only been available through costly courses or textbooks.

Its brilliant design relies on gamification to keep users coming back for more. Gamification turns this potentially dry activity into an addictive possibility, as learners, through skill trees, earn experience points, keep a daily streak, offer notes, and compete on leaderboards. All lessons are short and consist of vocabulary, grammar, listening, and speaking exercises, providing a balanced learning experience that can be done in busy schedules.

In addition to its enticing approach, Duolingo boasts an extensive list of languages, including the more popular ones, such as Spanish, French, and German, but also delving into rarer or even severely endangered languages, such as Hawaiian and Navajo. This vast range serves many global interests in preserving native tongues. Through its adaptive learning algorithms, it personalizes content delivery to focus on concepts that an individual user struggles with, creating the most efficient learning pathway.
